Patagonia Super Crystal Quartzite Kitchen

Devon, United Kingdom

Our Devon Installation

Some projects challenge your skills, while others redefine what is possible. This Patagonia Super Crystal Quartzite kitchen installation in

Devon, United Kingdom

was one of those memorable projects. The highlight is a stunning backlit island with a unique trapezium shape and slanting corners, making fabrication far more complex than a standard design. Every cut, angle, and joint had to align perfectly with the peculiar backlighting system. Known for its translucent beauty, Patagonia Quartzite reveals striking crystal formations and golden veining when illuminated. Despite the challenges, seeing the finished island glow beautifully made every effort worthwhile and deeply rewarding, here is our visual retreat for you.

The Challenge

What was actually difficult about this job was...

Every installation we photograph and list comes with its own honest list of challenges. We document them here so you can evaluate our work, dedication, and the effort we put into overcoming every struggle along the way.

The Problem

The trapezium-shaped island wasn't naturally square or level

(nothing in real homes ever is, surprise surprise). Slight floor deviations meant the slab seating had uneven load distribution.
How We Solved It
Our fabrication team carried out full laser templating and micro-adjusted the sub-frame before installation. High-tolerance levelling compounds and reinforced supports were introduced beneath the quartzite to ensure a perfectly stable base for the heavy slab.
The Problem

Patagonia Quartzite isn't uniformly translucent

; some areas pass light beautifully; others go, "Nah, I'm opaque today." That risked patchy lighting and weak visual light penetration.
How We Solved It
Each slab was mapped for translucency variation before fabrication. We strategically cut and positioned the most consistent light-pass zones over the LED grid layout. High-CRI, evenly diffused LED panels were used instead of strip lighting to avoid hot spots and create a smooth glow.
The Problem

These weren't friendly-sized pieces

; we're talking massive, heavy, fragile quartzite slabs. Manoeuvring them through tight UK access routes, doorways, and internal corners without damage was… let's say, stressful.
How We Solved It
A multi-stage lifting strategy was used: external hoist transfer where needed, custom A-frame carriers, and reinforced vacuum lifters for controlled movement. Entry routes were pre-prepared and protected, with temporary structural clearance modifications made before delivery day.
The Problem

Trapezium geometry means zero parallel sides

, so standard cutting logic doesn't apply. Any millimetre misalignment would ruin symmetry and make seams visible, especially under backlight.
How We Solved It
CNC waterjet cutting was combined with manual edge finishing by senior fabricators. Digital templating ensured angle-perfect geometry, while dry-fitting was done multiple times before final attachments. Seams were resin-matched and polished in layers to disappear under lighting.

The Material

Patagonia Quartzite swatch close-up

Patagonia Quartzite

A pretty translucent natural metamorphic quartzite quarried in Brazil, prized for its creamy, oyster background; dramatic grey, black-and-amber veining; and crystal structure dense enough to transmit light cleanly. Hard, non-porous, and suitable for both worktops and feature surfaces.

Starting in Plymouth, stretching through Exeter, touching Torquay, Paignton, then pushing north to Barnstaple – no spot gets overlooked. Whether it is Newton Abbot, Exmouth, or quieter spots like Tiverton and Bideford, movement never slows. Even remote areas near Tavistock feel the rhythm of ongoing visits. Towns, clusters of village homes, seaside plots, rural stretches – each location pulls equal attention. Craftsmanship arrives fully formed, right at your doorstep, no matter how tucked away you are.

Pricing Guide

What is the Average Cost of Quartzite?

For a Patagonia Quartzite Island with a matching backlit backsplash, pricing can vary significantly depending on slab selection, thickness, fabrication complexity, lighting specification, edge detailing, access conditions, and the fabricator you choose. In the UK, standard quartzite installations typically range from £488–£550+ per m² installed, while exotic quartzites such as Patagonia often command a premium due to their rarity, translucency, and suitability for backlighting.

FAQs

Questions About Quartzite Installation

True, you'll spot it often across British homes, think kitchen islands or standout wall sections. Though tough by nature, being a natural rock means it needs expert handling plus regular sealant care. Without those steps? Trouble shows up fast.
True - though some won't work at all. Light slips through only where the stone is see-through, meaning each piece needs close checking and layout planning ahead of cutting.
A strong base frame becomes necessary when setting up the structure, while LED panels must line up at consistent intervals. The depth of the slab needs careful monitoring during installation because uneven light positioning might lead to blotchy illumination or areas that get too hot.
Yes, but it requires CNC waterjet cutting and precise templating. Trapezium or irregular shapes increase installation complexity due to non-parallel edges.
Typically 20mm or 30mm slabs are used. For backlit installations, thickness may be adjusted depending on light diffusion requirements and structural support.
Yes. A steel or reinforced subframe is often required to handle the heavy load, especially for large islands or jumbo slab installations.
Usually 1–3 days and might depend on the warehouse distance and locality, depending on complexity, but backlit or large-format island projects can take longer due to wiring, alignment, and finishing.
