Dover White Marble Kitchen

Northampton, United Kingdom

Our Installation Story

For this kitchen project in

Northampton

, we have used a rare marble called

Dover White

. There is a matching splashback and island. Unlike other regular kitchen worktops, you can see how the central island is glowing in gold and there is a unique type of waterfall edge which flows from the surface to the floor. Stay tuned to find out how this worktop is literally glowing.

The Vision

Designing Around Light As Much As Stone

The radiance that we saw in the images was made possible with a feature called backlighting strips. Only a few stone surfaces permit light to pass through them. Onyx slabs are quite popular for that, but some marble and quartzite slabs also have some amount of translucent minerals in them which can make this possible if installed by experienced stonemasons. But creating a backlit marble feature isn't just about fitting LEDs behind a slab — we need to select the right marble and fabricate every element with absolute precision.

Design Vision
The island was intended to become the signature feature of the home, glowing naturally rather than looking artificially illuminated.
Our Approach
We carefully selected a translucent section of Dover White Marble and engineered the lighting system to produce a soft, even glow that enhanced the stone's natural beauty.
Design Vision
Only certain areas within a marble slab allow enough light to pass through for backlighting.
Our Approach
Each slab was inspected individually to identify sections with the ideal mineral composition and translucency before fabrication began.
Design Vision
The client wanted the island, worktops and splashbacks to feel connected as one elegant composition.
Our Approach
Slab layouts were digitally planned so the natural veining flowed harmoniously across each visible surface.
Design Vision
There is no doubt this kitchen looks stunning for a magazine, but does it allow daily tasks, or is it too hard to maintain? Here is how this visually appealing kitchen was made functional.
Our Approach
Every cut was made with precise detail, leaving no space for leaks, edges and corners finely polished, and the final surface sealed with perfection so that moisture does no harm.
Final Look — Even before the lighting is switched on, Dover White Marble is effortlessly elegant. At installation, homeowners are usually not allowed on site for safety reasons, so once completed and cleaned, we called them to turn the lights on — and it was no surprise, they were overwhelmed with our work. We love the soft amber tones; it looks like they are emerging naturally from within the stone, perfectly revealing crystalline layers that remain hidden under normal lighting.

FAQs

Questions About Backlighting in Stone Surfaces

No. This is what makes projects like this so special. Only selected slabs, or even selected sections within a slab, have the natural translucency needed for successful backlighting.
The LED lighting system is engineered behind the marble and concealed within the island structure, allowing the stone itself to become the feature rather than the lighting components.
No. When properly fabricated and installed using the correct support systems, a backlit marble feature remains structurally sound while delivering an exceptional visual effect.
Yes. As with most natural marbles, periodic sealing is recommended to help protect the surface from staining and everyday use.
Absolutely. While it's undoubtedly a luxury feature, it remains a fully functional kitchen island designed for everyday use, combining practicality with remarkable visual impact.
