Arabescato Vagli Extra Honed Marble Kitchen

Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom

Our Installation Story

We completed this kitchen worktop project for a newly married couple in

Dundee

who wanted their kitchen to look bold yet natural. There's nothing quite like a busy marble, if a little extra care can be spared.

Arabescato Vagli

became an instant stone centrepiece — a massive kitchen island sits at the centre, immediately grabbing a visitor's eye. Dark cabinets provide a strong contrast against the pale marble. Not everybody can handle busy veining, but this family loved the way this slab's dark grey veins had plenty of space to make an impression. The homeowners chose an extra honed finish so the worktop looks softer and balances the dramatic character of the marble.

The Vision

Letting The Marble Lead The Design

This Dundee kitchen has dark cabinets, premium appliances and a generous island. This type of space needed something highly expressive, but there were also other aspects to consider before installing it. Here's how each point was addressed.

Design Objective
Make the island the main visual feature of the kitchen.
Our Execution
A substantial Arabescato Vagli surface was fabricated across the island, giving the dramatic veining enough space to be appreciated across the full worktop.
Design Objective
Preserve the natural character of the marble while keeping a subtler look — a highly glossy, modern finish wasn't preferred.
Our Execution
The marble was extra honed, making the worktops look softer — the grey veins are highlighted better because of this understated finish.
Design Objective
Create a practical worktop around the range cooker without breaking the overall design.
Our Execution
The marble was accurately fabricated around the cooking zone, keeping the worktop practical while maintaining clean transitions around the appliance.
Design Objective
Give the pale marble a strong architectural backdrop.
Our Execution
The deep cabinetry creates a sharp contrast with the light stone, making the natural pattern appear even more pronounced.
Final Look — The Arabescato Vagli Extra Honed Marble kitchen looks absolutely luxurious without trying too hard to be noticed. The patterns on Arabescato Vagli immediately draw attention — busy grey veins on the island and worktop feel like part of a visual movement. The finish is toned down from gloss to matte, known as a honed finish, which keeps the overall appearance sophisticated.

Arabescato Vagli Extra Honed Marble

This is part of a highly expressive natural marble series, recognised for its pale background and pronounced grey veins. Some slabs show delicate linear patterns while others have much stronger interconnected webs — every slab looks different. The extra honed finish gives the slabs a softer, low-reflective appearance compared with a traditional polished finish. This stone is popular for bookmatched surface designs.

Dramatic Marble With A Softer Finish

Every stone surface need not be overly glossy to grab attention. Some slabs, like Arabescato Vagli marble, have unique patterns that are easily noticeable — for those slabs, a glossy finish isn't needed for impact. Against dark cabinetry, the pale marble creates a particularly strong contrast, while the large island provides enough surface area for the slab's natural pattern to become a genuine feature of the kitchen.

FAQs

Questions About Honed Marble Stone Surfaces

This type of finish is matte in nature. When light falls on it, the rays don't reflect like a glossy surface, so the surface naturally has reduced shine and a softer appearance.
Yes. Its dramatic natural pattern is particularly effective across large surfaces where the movement within the slab can be appreciated.
The maintenance requirements are different rather than one finish simply being better. Honed marble tends to show fewer surface marks but can be more porous, so it should be cared for accordingly.
Yes. Marble benefits from appropriate sealing to provide additional protection against staining and everyday kitchen use. The stone should also be cleaned with products specifically suitable for natural marble.
No. Natural marble is unique from slab to slab. The background tone, density and direction of the grey mineral movement can vary considerably, which is one of the defining characteristics of genuine Arabescato Vagli.
Yes, it is — but it's worth knowing that marble will develop character through use over time.
