Zimbabwe Leather Granite Worktop

Birmingham Shopping Mall, United Kingdom

Installation Story

The starting point was a long, linear counter that needed to do more than simply provide a working surface. Several openings had to be incorporated into the granite for the equipment and services required along the counter, so accuracy was important from the beginning. The leathered Zimbabwe Granite also brought a practical design consideration. A commercial counter can see plenty of handling throughout the day, and the textured surface gives it a more understated appearance than polished black granite. Once the stone was fabricated, the repeated cut-outs were positioned along the counter so the finished surface could accommodate the equipment without making the stone look unnecessarily busy. The light fluted cladding underneath the counter added another layer to the design. Against the black granite, it creates a clear contrast and stops the long counter from appearing too heavy.

The Design Direction

A Strong Surface for a Commercial Setting

The design needed something that could hold its own inside a retail environment without looking overly decorative. The deep charcoal-black appearance of Zimbabwe Leather Granite gives the counter a solid, understated presence, while the leathered finish adds texture when viewed up close.

Final Outcome —

The finished counter has a straightforward appearance from a distance, but there is plenty happening within the fabrication. The long black granite surface accommodates multiple openings while retaining a clean overall line. The leathered finish keeps the surface from looking overly glossy under the strong lighting typically found within commercial interiors. The pale fluted base then brings some warmth and texture underneath, creating a clear distinction between the countertop and the structure supporting it.

Zimbabwe Granite

Zimbabwe Black Granite is known for its deep dark appearance and relatively consistent background. In this project, the leathered finish changes the character of the stone considerably. Instead of the sharp reflections associated with polished granite, the surface has a subtle sheen with a tactile, slightly textured feel.

Leathered Black Granite for Commercial Counters

A dark granite surface does not necessarily need a polished finish. The leathered treatment used here gives Zimbabwe Granite a much softer visual character, making it suitable for commercial counters where a tactile, understated appearance is preferred. It also works well alongside textured architectural finishes such as fluted or slatted cabinetry, as demonstrated by this Birmingham shopping mall installation.
